What is a blip? "A temporary or insignificant phenomenon, especially a brief departure from the normal."
Why does it matter? Is my site just another blip on the internet? Likely so. At least, I think so. My 1,000th hit doesn't mean much. It could mean that a thousand different people have visited my site, or it could mean one person (like me) has visited it one thousand times. Some may call it a "milestone"; but how can they be so sure? A milestone is "An important event, as in a person's career, the history of a nation, or the advancement of knowledge in a field; a turning point."
Is this a turning point in this site? Have I advanced in knowledge from this event? I don't feel any smarter. And if this is a turning point, which direction were we going, and going now? Can a blip be so small that it cannot have an important event happen? Or even change direction? My site is a blip. Is Yahoo's site a blip? Or MSN? Or Google? Hotmail? What makes them any different? They are all temporary, they will go away eventually. They are all also insignificant phenomenon. Consider it from an Alien's point of view, what is it to him? Insignificant. Is it a phenomenon? "An occurrence, circumstance, or fact that is perceptible by the senses." That would lead me to believe so. They are all blips.
If this site is a blip on the internet, if every site on the internet is just a blip, does that make the whole internet a blip? It is temporary, but does the number of objects combining to make up the whole, make it any less insignificant? If it will all disappear sooner or later, why does it matter? Why even create a site? To show off your creativity? Why should anyone else care about your creativity, or what you have created? They may not care, but they may visit. Why? You may never know; but be thankful they do. You have the opportunity, use it. I've missed the opportunity of enough. A thousand? Maybe. One? Could be. But one would be more than enough to regret having missed.
Can the internet be compared to the human race? Billions of us--All temporary, and we seem so insignificant compared to everything around us. Would that make us blips also? Our bodies die, fail to support us, we are temporary here on Earth. Are we insignificant in this gigantic universe? When we get past our self-centeredness, it can certainly seem so. Are we a phenomenon? According to the definition above, yes. Are we a "brief departure from the normal"? What is normal? We know so little about the universe, we cannot define it. For all we know, there is no normal, anywhere, ever.
Where did we come from? How did we get here? What happens at the end? Is there an end? Was there a beginning? Is it all true? Are they right? Will I ever get any answers? Or are there no answers? Are we blips? Are we meaningless little specks in the cosmos? Do we matter at all? We are matter, but do we matter? I know the answer...Do you?
Don't want to know?
Definitions are from Dictionary.com, I have nothing against Yahoo, MSN, Google, or Hotmail. They are all good sites that I visit often.
